Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena - ADVISABLE

De La Pena, Matt Last Stop on Market Street, illustrated by Christian Robinson. PICTUREBOOK, Penguin (Putnam) 2015. $16.99. Content: G.

On Sunday after church, CJ and his Nana ride the bus to the Last Stop on Market Street. Along the way they meet a blind man, a spotted dog, a man who plays the guitar and their friendly bus driver.  CJ is full of questions which Nana patiently answers.  Nana sees the beauty in everything.  It’s not about waiting in the wet, is about the rain giving the trees a drink, and you don’t need a music player when you have a live guitar player sitting across from you. Eventually they reach their destination, the soup kitchen, not to eat but to serve.

The acrylic and collage illustrations are reminiscent of Keats A Snowy Day and gives this picturebook a timeless quality.
