Dead Air by Michelle Schusterman - ADVISABLE

Schusterman, Michelle   Dead Air  (The Kat Sinclair Files, book 1)  240 pages. Grosser & Dunlap (Imprint of Penguin Random House), 2015. $12.99. Language: G ; Mature Content: PG ; Violence: PG

Kat travels with her dad to Europe to film a TV show about haunted places. She is sad to leave behind her beloved grandma, who starred in lots of horror movies as a young woman and gave her a healthy dose of cynicism, but is also happy to leave behind the Thing that's been haunting her ever since her mom left. Unexpectedly, her experiences on the show force her to reconsider her cynical stance on ghosts, and, unfortunately, the Thing has followed her, eventually forcing her to confront her one true fear.

Part horror story, part mystery, part friendship and family drama, this is a good addition for ghost story fans. It mixes well the paranormal with regular bad-guy antics and adolescent insecurities and awkwardness. [Note: one character eventually shares that he got into a fight after expressing a gay attraction.]

Thanks for this thorough review. My public library doesn't have this, but I think I will order it for next year. Ghosts, diverse characters- los good. Happy new year!
