The Book Itch: ... Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore - OPTIONAL

Nelson, Vaunda Micheaux The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth , and Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie.  PICTURE BOOK.  Carolrhoda (Lerner), 2015.  $18.

The National Memorial African Bookstore was open in downtown New York from the 1930’s through the 1970’s, until the state forced him out the doors and then out of business,.  During those 40 years, however, Lewis Michaux, the proprietor, did everything he could to spread knowledge and learning to the African American community, attracting every notable figure of the day along the way.  Michaux believed in the power of words and in spreading those words far and wide.

I’m not convinced that this picture book belongs in an elementary school, but I do think it needs to be hand sold to any teacher who covers the Civil Rights Movement or Black Studies in their curriculum.

HS - OPTIONAL.  Cindy, Library Teacher
