Hulme-Cross, Benjamin, ill. By Nelson Evergreen. Marsh Demon. Pgs. 64. Darbycreek, 2013. $4.99. Language: G, Mature Content: PG, Violence: PG

Mr. Blood fights the dark with the help of his assistants, Edgar and Mary. From evil ghosts to marsh demons, they do the thankless job of saving town from creatures of the dark. When the trio arrive in Grimstock, they are asked to defeat the Marsh Demon. There’s just one catch, the demon takes children. Not wanting to lose any of their children, the townspeople imprison Mary and Edgar. If Mr. Blood doesn’t defeat the demon, Edgar and Mary will be its next victims. Will they succeed or will Edgar and Mary be eaten?

The illustrations are detailed and masterfully done. The text is simple, but manages to pull the reader into the story with ease. Characters are humorous and engaging. Reluctant readers who aren’t quite ready by Joseph Delaney’s Last Apprentice series will appreciate this horror-filled quick read. EL, MS. ADVISABLE.
