Dietary Supplements: Harmless, Helpful, or Hurtful? by Connie Goldsmith-ADVISABLE

Goldsmith, Connie, Dietary Supplements: Harmless, Helpful, or Hurtful? Pgs. 96. Twenty-First Century Books, 2016. $34.65. INFORMATION.

Want to lose weight? Get healthy? Increase athletic performance? A booming industry, dietary supplements come at us through advertisements of all kinds. What make a dietary supplement a dietary supplement? What FDA regulations are there? Do they do what they say they will do? A health industry professional, Goldsmith uses her background in nursing to explain the pros, cons, benefits, and hazards of using dietary supplements. Although one might think her bias would affect her presentation about dietary supplements, it’s surprisingly objective. Using primary sources and quotes from both sides of the industry, she causes the reader to ask themselves what it means to truly be healthy and the limit of supplements. Included are sources for further information, glossary, bibliography, and source notes to help with common core standards. A great point of view non-fiction title, readers who are doing an assignment, debating the topic, or who are interested in the topic will enjoy reading this book. MS, HS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
