Out at Home by Cal Ripken, Jr.-OPTIONAL

Ripken, Jr. Cal, Out at Home. Pgs. 202. Disney Hyperion, 2015. $16.99. Language: G, Mature Content: G, Violence: G

Mickey Labriogla loves baseball. He’s the best catcher on the team his dad coaches. When the team’s pitcher gets hurt and can’t finish the season, a new hotshot named Zoom comes in to the picture. He’s an awesome pitcher and has a crush on the same girl as Mickey, but Zoom is not a team player. He shows up late to practice, badgers the other team, and doesn’t seem to really enjoy the game. Too bad Mickey’s dad doesn’t seem to through the kids’ great pitching. Can Mickey get his team back on track for the championships? Will Zoom ever become a team player? Will Mickey and his dad see eye to eye?

The characters are one-dimensional and the plot is simplistic at best. Still, reluctant and avid readers who are into sports books will enjoy reading this book. EL. OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
