In the New World by Gerda Raidt –ADVISABLE

Raidt, Gerda In the New World: A family in Two Centuries Charlesbridge, 2015. $17.95 PICTURE BOOK
This book tells the emigration story of a German family as they move from rural Germany to the plains of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. They sell everything and take many forms of transportation to get to their final destination. We leave the family healthy and happy on their new farm. Next the book switches to current times and we see the family that is living in the house today, descendants of the original family. They decide to investigate their history and travel to Germany to see the very first farmhouse that the family owned.
This is a fantastic book for both understanding the European emigration process and for cultivating an interest in family history. The artwork was subdued yet harmonious. Would make a great introduction for a unit on family trees or a United States history unit.
