Hunt for the Hydra (Jupiter Pirates Book #1) by Jason Fry– ADVISABLE

Fry, Jason Hunt for the Hydra (Jupiter Pirates Book #1) 256 pages, HarperCollins, 2013. $6.99
This book follows the story of Tycho, a young boy living with his family on their space ship called the Shadow Comet. The Hashoone family are privateers, allowed to intercept Earth ships and take their cargo. In the past they were pirates, but now they are legal. Tycho must compete with his older brother and his twin sister to be considered to take over when their mom, the captain, retires or dies. They can choose to fight against each other or pull together as their family faces off with Thoadbone Mox, a Jupiter Pirate and slaver, and captain of the ship Hydra.
This is a great introduction to a series. I felt like I knew each character very quickly, and the author did a great job of setting the stage. I like the tension between the siblings as they struggle to compete and gain skills. Tycho is a fun character to follow as he gets to know himself and his abilities. I thought that the plot got complex rather quickly and might be over the head of many upper elementary students. This is because much of the complexity stemmed from discussion: politics, history, and many unmet characters. Overall this adventurous sci-fi was a really fun read!
