Historical Animals by Julia Moberg –ADVISABLE

Moberg, Julia Historical Animals 96 pgs. Imagine 2015. $15.95 NONFICTION
This large picture book features a double page spread of a huge selection of famous animals such as Shamu, Dolly, Unsinkable Sam, Balto and many more. A little poem is featured, a large illustration, historical stats, as well information tidbits such as did you know? There are also many pages that people that are a big part of lesser known but interesting animal adventures such as Alexander the greats horse, Mozart’s bird, Beatrix Potter and her pet, and the role of rats in The Black Plague.
This is a fun book with an endless supply of interesting animals and fun historical facts. As usual, where possible, I really want to see a mix of photographs and illustrations. I think this is important for especially younger students, with non-fiction books. It helps them to discern that what they are reading is real, while the illustrations add some colorful interest. I would pick this up for my school library, it might be fun to do animal biographies with a younger grade research unit.
