Flunked by Jen Calonita -- ADVISABLE

Calonita, Jen Flunked (Fairy Tale Reform School #1), 256 pgs. Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, 2015. $15.99. Language: G (0 swears), Violence: PG, Sexual Content: G.

Gilly Cobbler feels totally justified in stealing from the royals when they come to her village. After all, they're the reason her large, destitute family is forced to live in a shoe and often goes hungry. But then Gilly is caught thieving, and she's sentenced to a term at Fairy Tale Reform School, where she will be taught by supposedly-rehabilitated villains, including the Big, Bad Wolf and Cinderella's wicked stepmother. But there's evil afoot at the school, and if Gilly doesn't get to the bottom of it, she may be the next victim.

Flunked is filled with creative details, and Gilly is a fun character to follow through the story. The copious action and plot twists keep things moving, occasionally at the expense of character development. The ending feels rushed, but since it's the first in a series, I'm hoping this was intentional in order to leave room to explore some of the story threads in the second book. All in all a quick, entertaining read.
