Little Melba and Her Big Trombone by Katheryn Russell-Brown - - ADVISABLE

Russell-Brown, Katheryn Little Melba and Her Big Trombone illustrated by Frank Morrison, 40 pgs. Lee & Low Books, 2014 $18.95. PICTURE BOOK Content: G.

Melba Doretta Liston (1926-1999) was a famous jazz musician, playing her trombone all over the world.  This is the story of her youth, from her love of music to learning to play this very large instrument at the tender age of 6.  She was the first famous trombone player, and a rare female jazz musician.

The colorful illustrations tell as much story as the text: the large audiences at the concert halls to the segregation problems of the south.  Here’s another well-done biography.
