Bully by Laura Vaccaro Seeger - OPTIONAL

Seeger, Laura Vaccaro Bully  Roaring Book Press, 2013.  $15.99  PICTURE BOOK  Content: G.

On a farm, a bull is asked to play by other animals.  He tells them no and then proceeds to call them names (this is where things get weird—he actually calls a pig a pig and a chicken a chicken, but I think they are meant as insults, which is confusing for little kids).  He tells the skunk that he stinks and calls the turtle a slow poke, but the goat finally calls the bull a bully.  Then the bull looks confused and he says sorry and asks the animals if they want to play.

I didn’t like this book-it’s confusing because I think it’s aimed at little kids so they can understand what a bully is, but by having the character be a bull it doesn’t have enough words to make a clear point.  My boys had no idea what was going on in the story, and they quickly wanted to read a different book.

EL (K-3)-OPTIONAL.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
