Once Upon a Mastodon: All About Prehistoric Animals by Bonnie Worth - ADVISABLE

Worth, Bonnie  Once Upon a Mastodon:  All About Prehistoric Animals  Illustrated by Aristides Ruiz and Joe Mathieu  Random House, 2014.  EARLY READER  $9.99  Content: G.

The Cat in the Hat takes a couple of kids on a history lesson about prehistoric animals.  He explains what a mammal is and how they use fossils to discover more about what prehistoric animals looked like and what they ate.  Then they talk about specific types of animals, including cavemen.

This is a fun first look at the Ice Age time period.  There is a lot of text-too much for my beginning reader (kindergarten), but it’s a fun read aloud because it rhymes.  First or second graders could read it.  My kids were interested in it because they love the movie Ice Age and it has some of the same animals.  The pictures are bright and anytime there is a word that is hard to pronounce there is a guide to sound it out.
