Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse by Leo Lionni -- ADVISABLE

Lionni, Leo Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. PICTURE BOOK. Random House, 1969 (Step Into Reading reprint, 2014). $3.99. Content: G.

Alexander the mouse longs for friendship, but every time the humans in his house see him, they scream and chase him away. When he meets a wind-up mouse, the two soon become friends, but Alexander envies the love the toy receives from his humans. The two have a solution for that, but it turns out there's an even better way to make everyone happy, if only they're willing to look beyond the obvious.

This is a sweet tale of friendship, and it's nice to see that Alexander can overcome his envy and love his friend. The twist at the end is adorable and will likely leave many readers smiling. Because this is a reprint of a Caldecott Honor book, those hoping to add it to their collections may want to check first for duplicates.
