The Scarlet Dragon by Jordan Quinn -- ADVISABLE

Quinn, Jordan The Scarlet Dragon (The Kingdom of Wrenly #2), illustrated by Robert McPhillips. Little Simon, 2014. $15.99.

Content: G.

A red egg has been found on Crestwood, and it can only mean one thing: a rare scarlet dragon. As prince Wrenly, Lucas will be able to have the dragon as a pet -- that is, if the baby survives the sickness it was born with. The only solution is for Lucas and his friend Clara to find a scarce ingredient for a magic potion, before the dragon's time runs out.

This is a cute, fun adventure story. It would work well for either boys or girls, and the action and stakes keep the pace moving. The large font and copious illustrations make it a good fit for early chapter book readers who are ready for slightly longer stories. While it is the second in a series, it would stand alone just fine.
