The Nethergrim by Matthew Jobin - ESSENTIAL

Jobin, Matthew The Nethergrim, 356 p. Philomel (Penguin), 2014.  $18.  Mature Content: G; Langauge: G; Violence: PG (similar to Beyonders series).

The evil Nethergrim was defeated decades ago by the hero Tristan and the wizard Vithric.  So why are livestock disappearing?  Why has Edmund’s younger brother disappeared along with a few other children?  Edmund’s angry father refuses to allow him to study to be a wizard, but Edmund is not going to let his brother die at the hands of evil.  Even is he and his two best friends, Katherine, the wild daughter of the local horse trainer, and Tom, an indentured slave,  have to sneak off and tackle the Nethergrim alone.

Jobin dishes up heroism in extra large doses with his determined trio.  I love this classic fantasy offering.  The loose ends suggest that there is a sequel in the wings.
