The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler - ADVISABLE

Ockler, Sarah  The Book of Broken Hearts, 357 pgs.  Simon Pulse, 2013.  $16.99  Content: Language: R (64 swears; 5 “F”); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: PG.

Jude has always lived under the thumb of her older three sisters and the number one rule in their sisterhood is to never get involved with a Vargas boy.  So when Jude hires Emilio Vargas to help her father restore his vintage motorcycle, she knows she is taking a chance.  But Jude’s father has early onset Alzheimer’s and Jude thinks that restoring his motorcycle might restore some of his memories.  As Jude goes through heartbreaking moments with her father, she finds that Emilio is helping her with more than a motorcycle.

This is a sweet romance and learning to not judge others by their family.  Along with the teenage angst is a serious look at what Alzheimer’s means to those who are affected.  The language is my only qualm with this book because the “F” word was completely out of place with the rest of the story.  The swearing didn’t fit with any of the characters.

HS-ADVISABLE.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
