No Place by Todd Strasser - ESSENTIAL

Strasser, Todd No Place, 262 p. Simon & Schuster, 2014.  $18.  Language: PG (8 swears, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (man is beaten).

Dan should be enjoying his high school years, especially because he is s tar baseball player and pretty much guaranteed a scholarship to Rice University.  Instead, his mom has been out of work for four years, his dad has lost his job and now, instead of loving with his uncle, he and his parents are headed for their town’s tent city – a gathering place for town’s homeless people.  Dan and his parents are desperate, doing whatever they can to keep life and limb together.  Others in the town, however, only see them as an eyesore.  And someone is desperate enough to do something awful to rid the town of the “problem”.

Strasser is a master of taking life as we hear about it and turning into a novel that exposes the subject matter for students.  This look at life because of the recession is eye-opening and well worth shelve space everywhere.
