What Came from the Stars by Gary D. Schmidt -- ESSENTIAL

Schmidt, Gary D. What Came from the Stars, 294 pgs. Clarion Books, 2012. $16.99.

Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG. (Battle scenes, not graphic)

When 6th grader Tommy finds a special chain in his new lunchbox strange things start to happen around him.  The O’Mondim have come to earth from a far away planet, and the search for the Art of the Valorim is wreaking havoc on the small town located near Plymouth Rock.

Told as two stories; the war and subsequent reign of the evil Lord Mondus over the Valorim (science fiction), and the realistic fiction story of Tommy who is dealing with the death of his mother, this novel carefully dovetails the two genre.  Schmidt has placed Valorim vocabulary throughout the book in such great context that the glossary at the back is not even necessary. A nice study in voice.  While this may be a challenge for upper elementary, I would recommend it at all levels, particularly Middle School.
