Seven Clues to Winning You by Kristin Walker -- OPTIONAL

Walker, Kristin 7 Clues to Winning You 317 pgs. Razorbill, 2012. $9.99. Language: PG-13 (25 swears. No 'f.'), Sexual Content: R; Violence: PG.

When preppy Blythe is caught on-camera picking her nose and the photo goes viral, she thinks her humiliation is complete. Good thing she doesn't attend the school where the picture is taken -- and where her father is principal. But when her dad sets his sights on becoming superintendent, she has to move to the very school where she was a laughing-stock. Not only has her photo made her infamous, but when she throws a fit to retaliate against those who humiliated her and has the school-wide scavenger hunt cancelled, she finds herself truly alienated. The only solution: to redeem herself in the eyes of her peers by taking the scavenger hunt underground with the help of nerdy-but-cute Luke. Even if it means risking expulsion, and ruining her father's chance at the superintendent's seat.

7 Clues to Winning You is a fun read with a clever premise. The romance is very sweet and nicely developed. The secondary characters, as well, were interesting, unique, and generally well-drawn. Unfortunately, Blythe herself was hard to admire, which sometimes made this one difficult to enjoy. Although she was frequently described as being friendly and giving, she often came across as sanctimonious, spoiled, and snotty, and I found her choice to have the scavenger hunt cancelled and then take it underground -- despite what it might do to her father's reputation -- very selfish. Still, this is a fun, romantic, ultimately uplifting read that makes some good points. The sexual content -- no full acts described on the page, but plenty of other references -- makes this one optional for schools, but it would be a good addition to public libraries.
