Mommy's Little Monster by Dawn McNiff and Kate Willis-Crowley -- ADVISABLE

McNiff, Dawn and Kate Willis-Crowley Mommy's Little Monster 32 pgs. Chicken House, 2013. $16.99. PICTURE BOOK.

When Tiny Troll's mother informs him that he will have a babysitter that evening, he has an all-out temper tantrum. Knowing he's in good hands, however, his mother heads off to her party. When Mrs. Hag coaxes him out of his room with a special treat, the young troll realizes that babysitters can have their perks, too. His mother returns to find him in bed, drowsily awaiting her 'Goodnight.' As she leaves the room, he drifts sweetly off to sleep again.

A nice way to show that it's okay to be sad when Mommy goes away, but that babysitters are fun, too, and that sometimes parents do need time for themselves. The reappearance of the mother at the end is reassuring for young children, as is the evidence that she thought of him even while she was away.
