In a post-apocalyptic America, a rat-borne plague has spread across the mainland. To  escape the plague, John, his family, and many others have been living on Hatrass Island  nearby. Shunned because of his lack of elemental powers like everyone else, When a hurricane threatens the island, the teens are sent to nearby Roanoke Island. Soon, some pirates advance on the island. Caught between the plague-ridden mainland and pirate, the teens have no choice but to fight back. The pirates are attacking, because they think John or his deaf brother are the key to ending the plague. Can Thomas find a way to stop the pirates and save the other teens?

The characters are likable and engaging. The story is full of mystery, suspense, and intrigue. Readers who like science fiction, dystopian fiction, and mystery will enjoy reading this book. EL (5-6). MS. ESSENTIAL. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI PUblic Library.
