Maybelle and the Haunted Cupcake by Katie Speck –ADVISABLE

Speck, Katie and illustrated by Ratz de Tagyos, Paul  Maybelle and the Haunted Cupcake 64 pgs. Henry Holt and Co, 2012. $12.23.  (Rating: G)
Maybelle is a girl cockroach who knows how to keep safe –only go out at night. When an ant with a wild streak risks her life over and over to get treats during the day for her –calling her a queen, Maybelle gets a bit wild herself. When an attempt to steal a cupcake goes awry –the entire household wakes up and Maybelle and her friends are in danger.
Despite the fact that I don’t care for bugs and found that component a bit cringe worthy, it was actually a fun story –and I think students will love the point of view of the bugs! Plus the mention of treats is always a bonus –even if bugs are eating them!
