The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray-ESSENTIAL

Murray, Laura.  Lowery, Mike.  The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School, 32 pgs. Putnam Juvenile, 2011.  $16.99.  Inside cover:  “Fresh out of the oven, the Gingerbread Man is ready for school.  But when recess arrives, the class who baked him leaves him behind!  Luckily, he’s one smart cookie and takes off after them. With the help of the gym teacher, the nurse, the art teacher and even the principal, the Gingerbread Man finds his way back to class and discovers that they have been searching for him too.  A deliciously sweet ending is served up for both the Gingerbread Man and the children who made him.”  What a unique and fun-filled twist on the classic tale of the Gingerbread Man!   We loved this book!  We enjoyed how the Gingerbread Man not only runs, but also slides, skips and limps as he desperately tries to catch the children who created him.  It is a tender story about friendship, endurance and success.  Pre-K.  EL (K-3). ESSENTIAL.  Reviewer:  SL.

I couldn't agree more with this review of The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School! This is a fun, surprising, heartwarming picture book. Because of the rhythm of the text, it's great for reading aloud to a group or an individual child.
