The Story of Ferdinand (75th Anniversary) by Munro Leaf -OPTIONAL

Leaf, Munro and illustrated by Lawson, Robert The Story of Ferdinand (75th Anniversary), 72 pgs. Viking Juvenile; Anv edition, 2011. $14.28. EARLY READER.
The much beloved story of Ferdinand the pacifist bull is presented in a hardback edition for the 75th anniversary. On the farm Ferdinand is not like the other bulls, who play fight all day long, he instead prefers to sit under his favorite tree and relax. When an unfortuitous event leads to Ferdinand being chosen to participate in a bull fight in the city of Madrid, he must decide his own fate.
The simplistic artwork of this classic is exquisite, one cannot helped be charmed by Ferdinand. But the inclusion of the bull fighting culture of Spain is both a blessing and a curse. An important component in Spain’s heritage, it is both violent and complex to explain to a 5 to 6 year old reader. Are your kindergarteners ready for the art of bullfighting? I am going with optional to leave that up to you.
