Painter and Ugly by Robert J Blake –ADVISABLE

Blake, Robert J Painter and Ugly 48 pgs. Philomel, 2011. $13.06 EARLY READER
Best friends, Painter and Ugly, are pair of sled dogs that no distance can keep apart. When they are split up and put on different sledding teams, they bide their time until they can find a way to be together again. During the big race, the Junior Iditarod, Painter and Ugly find their chance. Both team leads, they are at the head of their packs as they race for victory.
Amazing top of the line paintings are presented as illustrations for this book. I am tempted to take the book to pieces and frame a few. The story is great and could easily be used as a curriculum connection to a lesson on sledding and the inspiring Junior Iditarod. To get the top rating, I would have liked to have seen more information: on the race itself, or the bond between the handlers and the dogs, what the junior racers have to go through. Any tidbits would have filled out this story and made the struggle of the two dogs to find one another even better.
