Giant Steps to Change the World by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee

Lee, Spike and Tonya Lewis Giant Steps to Change the World illustrated by Sean Qualls 40 pgs. Simon and Schuster BFYR, 2011. PICTURE BOOK. $16.99. Spotlighting heroes from the past and present, this book discusses the fact that in order to achieve anything at all, you have to be brave enough to take that first step. The message is very inspiring and powerful ...but you have to pass through obstacles to get to it. Obstacles like the fact that it lacks fluidity and that the vocabulary might be hard for kids to grasp. Or that it is way too vague...there is no reference to who the hero being spotlighted even is. Nor is there extra information at the back of the book regarding the people that were spotlighted. However, it could be used as a research activity...research the people and figure out which page talks about which person. Also, I find it interesting that Obama was one of the heroes...really?? O.K. book with a really great message. EL-ADVISABLE. Whitney, Library-Teacher.
