Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger

The DUFF: (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)Keplinger, Kody, DUFF: The Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Poppy, 2010. Pgs 280. Language: R (50+ swears (I quit counting at this point), 12+ “f”s (quit after this point as well)). Sexual Content: R, Violence: PG-13

Seventeen-year-old Bianca is loyal, cynical, and the uglier, in her opinion, of her friends. When a jerk at school named Wesley tries to flirt and get the attention of her. At first she ignores him, despite his nickname for her: DUFF(Designated Ugly Fat Friend), but things at home start getting rough with her parents’ divorce. On a particularly low point in her life, she has sexual relations with Wesley and starts a enemies-with-benefits-relationship. Until it all goes bad and she starts falling for him! Will Wesley return her love or will Bianca get horribly burned by love?

The characters are ill-developed. There’s tons of swearing and the plot is poorly developed. With sex scenes and other such things that might offend the average reader, this book would be better suited for a public library. Public Only. NO. Reviewer: Jessica M, Library Media Specialist, Olympus Jr. High

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I can understand where it would be inappropriate to be in any school library.
