Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise by Kate DiCamillo

DiCamillo, Kate. Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise, illustrated by Chris Van Dusen. 70 pgs. Candlewick Press, 2010 (2007). Reprint. $5.99. Sexual Content-G; Language-G; Violence-G.

Mrs. Watson has a great idea—to dress up Mercy and go trick-or-treating. What should a pig be dress up as for Halloween? A princess of course! Mercy is reluctant to wear the dress Mrs. Watson makes until she finds out that she will get treats. Mercy is a butter-loving pig, who is hoping for toast and each door. The first door they go to is the Lincoln sisters. One sister refuses to give her candy, but the other gives Mercy candy at the back door. Mercy pigs out and then chases the cat General Washington up a tree. They’ll need the fire department and piles of buttered toast to set everything right. A simple story that is sure to appeal to beginning chapter book readers and fans of the series. The expressive and humorous illustrations are a delight.
