Birmingham Sunday by Larry Dane Brimner

Brimner, Larry Dane Birmingham Sunday.  Calkins Creek (Lerner), 2010.  $17.95.  INFORMATIONAL PICTURE BOOK.  Even before the bomb blast that ripped apart a church and ended four young girls’ lives, Birmingham, Alabama, was a hot bedded of racial tension, protests and danger.  Brimner catalogs the tensions that proceeded that day and the aftermath – including two more youth who were murdered and the long road to justice.  While this book is formatted as a picture book, it is densely packed with information.  It is really more appropriate for older students who need to do deeper research into the civil rights movement.  It is extremely valuable to teachers of any subject that touches upon the subject.  EL, MS – ADVISABLE.
